Oakland, California

Sell your wrecked or totaled car in Oakland

Oakland has more freeway miles inside its boundaries than any city in the East Bay, and the MacArthur Maze funnels four of them into one place. We collect across the whole city, and the pickup is free wherever the car is sitting.

Free pickup in Oakland, thirty-five minutes from Fremont. Paid in full before the truck leaves.

What you will be offered in Oakland

The first quote you get will price the metal

Oakland has the largest concentration of metal recyclers and dismantlers on this side of the bay, much of it along the estuary and the 880 industrial strip. The upshot for a seller is the same as in Hayward: the quotes arrive fast, they agree with each other, and they are all the same method.

Theft-recovery and vandalism write-offs are the Oakland cars that get priced worst, because the damage looks catastrophic and is mostly interior. The mechanical value is untouched and it is substantial.

Three buyers, three different questions

The number you are offered depends almost entirely on which question the buyer is answering.

A scrap yard

Prices: The weight

The car goes on a scale and the number comes off the day's rate per ton. A 2008 shell and a 2022 crossover with a bent bumper weigh about the same, so they are offered about the same.

Genuinely the right answer for a car that is finished: stripped, burnt out, flooded to the roof, or old enough that nothing on it has a buyer.

A dismantler or part yard

Prices: Their shelf space

They price what they can pull and sell from their existing inventory, which means the value depends on what they already have too many of. The same car is worth less to them in a month when three like it came in.

Right for a common car with one or two parts in demand, and it beats scrap. It is still a parts price, not a vehicle price.

Us

Prices: The vehicle

What it is, what is wrong with it, and what the whole thing is worth to the buyer who wants it in that condition. That is a different question from what it weighs and from what sits on somebody's shelf, and on a repairable car it is a much larger number.

Right whenever the car is worth more as a car than as material, which is most late-model vehicles with collision damage and almost every runner.

Two cars, and what each one was actually offered

2016 Hyundai SonataFremont, 94539

$475 quoted as scrap
$1,350 what we paid

Quoted $475 by weight. We paid $1,350 for the same car on the same day, because a running four-cylinder drivetrain and four straight doors are worth more than the metal they are made of.

10 hours from first call to payment

2020 Toyota HighlanderEast Bay

$12,500 what we paid

The owner had been told it was finished. We paid $12,500. A late-model SUV with collision damage is a repair estimate, not a scrap vehicle, and the two numbers are not in the same range.

Two real purchases, not illustrations. Your car is a different car, and the only way to find out what it is worth is to have it priced.

What arrives from Oakland

The damage we actually see here

The 880 through East Oakland and the Maze approach are where most of what we collect from Oakland was damaged, and vandalism and theft recovery are a much bigger share here than anywhere else in the East Bay. A recovered stolen vehicle with a punched ignition and a stripped interior is still a drivetrain and a body, and it is routinely written off as though it were neither.

We collect across East Oakland, Fruitvale, Temescal, Rockridge, West Oakland, Montclair and Jack London, and off I-880, I-580, I-980, the MacArthur Maze, High Street and Hegenberger Road. Oakland collection runs up the 880 and we are there most days. Pickup is free, including from an impound lot or a police hold.

The clock nobody mentions

Why waiting costs you money in Oakland

Four things are happening to your car and your claim right now. None of them is a sales tactic. All of them you can check yourself in about ten minutes.

The car is worth less every month it sits

A wrecked car does not hold still. The battery discharges and sulfates, seals and gaskets dry out, brake rotors and lines corrode, tires flat-spot and perish, and anything that was holding fluid starts not to. None of that touches the damage from the collision. All of it comes off what the car is worth.

Check it: If the car has been parked since the accident, work out how many months that is. That is roughly how much of the drivetrain value has been quietly spending itself.

A tow yard charges by the day, and it does not stop

If the car went to a tow yard or an impound lot after the collision, there is a daily storage charge accruing against it right now. Bay Area yards commonly run into the high tens of dollars a day once the free period ends, and the lien attaches to the vehicle. A car can sit long enough that the storage bill exceeds what anybody will pay for it, at which point the yard keeps it and the owner gets nothing.

Check it: Call the yard and ask for the current total and the daily rate. If the car is in storage, this is the most expensive clock running against you and the only one with a hard ending.

Claim decisions have deadlines, and they are not yours to extend

If an insurer has declared a total loss, the decision about whether you keep the vehicle, and what the carrier deducts if you do, runs on the carrier's timetable. Owner-retained salvage is a choice with a window on it. So is disputing a valuation. The windows differ by carrier and by policy, which is exactly why they catch people out: there is no single deadline to remember and no reminder coming.

Check it: Ask your adjuster, in writing, what your deadline is for the retention decision and for disputing the valuation. Get it before you decide anything, not after.

Our written offer stands for 14 days

The number we put in writing is good for 14 days. That is not a pressure tactic and there is no timer on this page. It is how long we can hold a price against a market that moves, and it is stated so you know what you are holding rather than finding out when you call back.

Check it: The date is on the offer itself. If it lapses, call and we will price it again. The number may be different, because the car will be.

The California paperwork, handled with you

The release of liability

File the Notice of Transfer and Release of Liability, form REG 138, with the DMV within five calendar days of the sale. It is free and it takes about two minutes online.

Notice of Transfer and Release of Liability

If the title is missing

One procedure is different. If a vehicle is going onto a Nonrepairable Vehicle Certificate and you do not have the California title, the DMV asks for a notarized Application for Replacement or Transfer of Title, form REG 227, as the proof of ownership. That requirement belongs to that certificate. It is not a general rule for selling a car without a title, and it does not apply to an ordinary signed title at all.

Application for Replacement or Transfer of Title (REG 227)

If it is a total loss

REG 488C is the Application for Salvage Certificate or Nonrepairable Vehicle Certificate. It is the form that gets filed. What comes back from the DMV is the Salvage Certificate itself, and that is the document that takes the place of your pink slip.

Your plates

On an ordinary California sale, standard plates stay with the vehicle. Personalized and special-interest plates belong to you, so take those off before pickup and you can retain or transfer them through the DMV.

License plates, decals and placards

We are not attorneys and we are not the DMV. What is here is the general rule with the DMV's own page one click away. Where your situation decides the answer, we will say so rather than guess for you.
